There are more than 150 variations of massage, bodywork, and somatic therapy
techniques. Many practitioners utilize multiple techniques. Here are brief
descriptions of just a few (the common ones):
- Swedish Massage is the most common form of massage, and mainly
relaxes the muscles, easing aches and pains.
- Sports Massage consists of specific components designed to reduce
injuries, alleviate inflammation, provide warm-up, etc. for amateur
and professional athletes before, during, after, and within their
training regimens.
- Shiatsu is a Japanese accupressure massage that restores energy to
the body.
- Trager® utilizes rhythmic rocking movements to relax the body and
mind.
- Hellerwork is a combination of movement re-education and muscle and
connective tissue therapy.
- Polarity therapy balances the energetic systems of the body.
- Reflexology is manipulation of the feet, hands, and/or ears to
stimulate corresponding areas in the body, promoting healing.
